Gold Star Mothers' Manchester statue a reminder of sacrifice

The organization began in 1928, with the name growing from the World War I tradition of replacing a blue star in the window with a gold one when a soldier was killed, said Bill Trueheart, chairman of the New Hampshire Gold Star Mothers Memorial Association.

The connection between the armed services and civilian public safety officials has always been a strong one, said the 23-year veteran who served in Korea and Vietnam.
