Strongman to attempt record to raise funds, awareness for Ky. charities



Bruce will attempt the death-defying record at a special fundraising event Aug. 25 in Somerset at The Center for Rural Development. A donation of $5 per adult will be collected at the door, with all proceeds going toward the Lake Cumberland Blue Star Mothers and the Bethany House Abuse Shelter of Somerset.

The singing Gilbert family salutes the troops with ‘The Wiz’




The GilbertsThe five Gilberts were part of the Valley's Dream Kids performing troupe for 12 years, under the Dream Come True Foundation. After the 9/11 attacks, the Gilberts took their work seriously and started thinking about U.S. military troops who protect our freedoms and how to show appreciation for their sacrifice. In 2005, they founded the charitable organization, Sing for America, and continue to perform in the Valley and along the East Coast to raise donations for families of active military. They have appeared locally at Mayfair Festival of the Arts, Musikfest, The Great Allentown Fair, and Coca Cola Park. To date, they have raised more than $30,000 through donations for the Valley chapter of Blue Star Mothers.

A special spot for the wounded

Patrons pulling into the parking lot at Jimmy the Greek Family Restaurant  are probably wondering about the new sign marking a special parking spot.
Erected two weeks ago, the sign at the business along Garrisonville Road in Stafford County reads: “Reserved. Combat Wounded.” In the center of the placard is an image of the Purple Heart medal established by George Washington to honor those injured in battle.

Roseville kids, seniors hold patriotic painting party






Maddie Wildie pointed out her hand-painted cards among the dozens laying on a table at Alta Manor Assisted Living and Memory Care Community in Roseville.
"We're making cards for the troops in Afghanistan that say thank you for protecting our country," Maddie said.
The 9-year-old, her younger sister Allie and about 20 other kids from St. Clare Catholic Church joined residents of the senior facility on July 12 to make cards for Sacramento Blue Star Moms to add to a growing care package, which will be mailed to troops later this month. Blue Star Moms is a service organization that supports U.S. troops.

Presentation on PTSD set at Albany church

“The War After the War — Understanding PTSD” will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 19, at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, 1730 Hill St. S.E., in Albany.
The keynote speaker will be Belle Landau, executive director of the Returning Veterans Project.
The class is free and no tickets are necessary. The event is sponsored by the Blue Star Mothers of the Willamette Valley.
