McConville spoke of an Army at war for a decade, of soldiers who have
remained for as many as six deployments, of missing birthdays,
Christmases and a child's first steps. He also spoke of his own son, who
has just been commissioned, and of his wife's entry into the ranks of
Blue Star mothers, and of the bond of a mother and her son that led to
the creation of Gold Star Mothers back in World War I.
