Birth of the Blue Star Canteen - Canandaigua, NY

"Canandaigua, N.Y. — Chainsaws, hammers and gas grills were in full swing Saturday as dozens of Navy reservists and community members spent the day renovating an old house on the grounds of the VA Medical Center.

Why the gas grills? The moms with Blue Star Mothers — a not-for-profit organization that supports veterans and troops — were making sure the Navy Reserve Seabees with the Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 21, based in Rochester, and the volunteers working alongside them, were well-fed.
While Blue Star moms alternated between restocking tables of food to helping with various carpentry jobs, the reservists and volunteers worked up a sweat fixing porch screens, resetting light fixtures, building closets and scraping off old paint."
