Operation Sweet Tooth Spreads Joy
With the support of other local merchants, Lunson will offer
local children $1 for every pound of candy they drop off at her
office the day after Halloween, Nov. 1. The collected candy will
then be passed on to a local chapter of the Blue Star Mothers,
which will in turn distribute the sweet treats to the United States

Veterans Stand Down
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Stand Down refers to a concept used during the Vietnam War where battle-weary soldiers were removed from combat, and given a day of rest. It was an opportunity for troops to take care of personal hygiene, receive medical and dental care and enjoy a warm meal.
In 1988, Vietnam Veterans of San Diego and a couple of other men formed Stand Down — an event for homeless veterans where they can obtain clothing, get basic check-ups, and eat a hot meal with companions. The annual Stand Down event has since spread to cities across the nation.
Living on the streets is “like combat for homeless vets trying to survive,” said Lisa Strauss, homeless program coordinator for the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Grand Junction.

Kudos to Hooper and Weaver Mortuary
The Blue Star Mothers, Sierra Nevada Chapter #12 would like to thank Kay Baker and her staff at Hooper and Weaver Mortuary.
I went to Kay with a request. Blue Star Mothers needed to purchase two plaques to place in the town of Truckee for their fallen soldiers, 1st Lt. Nathan Krissoff and Sgt. Phillip Allen Bocks. Kay not only helped us with the communication and purchase of these plaques, she did so with no cost to us for her assistance and service.
Her generous gift is deeply appreciated and we wanted to thank her and her staff so very much. We could not have done with without their help.

Blue Star Mothers help to Support Parents
When Joan Van Swol's son was deployed to Iraq the first time, she didn't have the unique level of supportive understanding that she gets with Blue Star Mothers.
"I have a terrific family, but unless you're the mother of a deployed service member, you just don't know what it's like," she said. "No one knows what military moms go through except other military moms."
Blue Star Mothers is a support, social and service group devoted to supporting the moms of active and retired military personnel. The Southeast Wisconsin, Chapter 2 group meets the third Thursday of each month at Sturtevant Village Hall. They share a pot luck meal and discuss upcoming events in which they'll participate, like the Memorial Day parade or putting together care packages for troops currently deployed.

Novato soldier home from Afghanistan receives hero's welcome
After 13 months in Afghanistan, Spc. Chris Fagioli returned home to Novato on Friday — and his mother couldn't be happier.
"He's home and safe, and I'm just going to stare at him for a little while," said Tina Mohn, Fagioli's mother.
Fagioli — who could not speak to the Independent Journal per military orders — had spent more than a year as a member of the U.S. Army's 86th Expeditionary Signal Batallion, serving most recently at a contingency operating point near Afghanistan's Kunar Valley. "He sets up the communication system on bases and runs that," said Mohn, who
couldn't be prouder of her son — even though she had originally done everything in her power to keep Fagioli from joining the Army.

Columbia Place mall Mall has kicked off an Operation Heartfelt Salute campaign to support military members and their families.
The campaign, which continues through March 12, includes a letter-writing program and care package delivery to soldiers.
Shoppers can stop by the mall offices and write a note of appreciation on specially prepared postcards. Or they can donate items for care packages to be sent to deployed military personnel.
Suggested care items include DVDs, CDs, toiletries, cheese and cracker packs, canned fruit, pudding, chips and other packaged food items. Items can be dropped off at the mall office between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday or between noon and 2 p.m. Saturday.

Candy Collection for Overseas Troops

Kids were lining up to trade in their Halloween candy to be sent overseas and make some cash off of it as well. Oral Health Partners and the Grand Valley Blue Star Mothers are teaming up to help our military men and women overseas.
Here's how it works: kids bring in their candy, they get $2 a pound for it, and then it is all shipped throughout the world.
Last year, 500 pounds of candy was collected. This year they've already broken that record and collected more than 600 pounds and counting.
The kids did admit they didn't donate all their candy, and were able to sneak a stash for themselves.
This is the second year this event has been held.

Grand Junction - Another one of the Western Slope's finest is back home for the holidays. Late Wednesday morning, Airman Angela Abeyta from Delta arrived home to a hero's welcome at the Grand Junction Regional Airport.
Abeyta is currently stationed in Texas for technical training. She says she's excited to be home for Christmas, and is looking forward to her two week break.
"Just some good-home cooked meals. That's all I'm looking forward to. And maybe some sledding if the snow comes," said Abeyta.
Along with friends and family, Abeyta was welcomed home by the Blue Star Mothers along with veterans from the local VFW.

Army dad makes surprise visit to son's elementary school
Nine-year-old Dominic J. Mascroft was paid a surprise visit by a soldier — his father, U.S. Army Spec. Brian R. Mascroft — who returned earlier than expected after a year in Iraq.
“See that? I got you out of school,” his father said.
After the Mascrofts reunited with a warm embrace in front of classmates, who responded with rousing applause, Ms. Menard asked the boy if he was surprised.

Ms. Messier, a member of the Blue Star Mother's organization that conducts campaigns for food drives and contributions shipped overseas to their children and their units, spoke of her son's return.
“It's very heart-wrenching, when you think about everyone over there and what they're doing, not knowing where they are because they can't tell you,” she said. “Moms always like to keep track of their kids and where they are and when they're in the service they can't do that.”

For the third year, the Blue Star Hoosier Mothers prepared a free breakfast and lunch for people who attended the expo.
Biscuits and gravy were on the menu for breakfast followed by brats, green peppers, onions, red potatoes and green beans for lunch.
"After our meeting last night, I went home and used my mother's iron skillet to fry sausage and make gravy," Gayle Sosbe said. "We have a good time helping Claude out. We honor our veterans. We love to do it. Besides, Claude needs to be out here (among the veterans.)"
Sosbe is the outgoing president of the Blue Star Hoosier Mothers. Lynn Ringis is the new president and Lisa Denau is the new vice president.
Sosbe was wearing an apron she received as a gift.
"It's half Marines and half Navy," she said proudly.
Sosbe said the Blue Star Hoosier Mothers group is growing. As many as 25 people attend the meetings, which are usually held the last Thursday of each month, but the meeting date is changed from time to time, such as in November due to Thanksgiving.

Local Gold Star Mother would like state tribute to address whole families of fallen soldiers
PAW PAW - Laura De Roo of Paw Paw, vice president of the local Blue Star Mothers group is pleased that Gov. Jennifer Granholm has designated Sept. 26, Gold Star Mother's Day, honoring the sacrifices of the mothers of fallen soldiers. But, De Roo and her husband, David, wish the tribute would be extended to state Gold Star Families, Gold Star Dads, siblings, spouses, and children, all who have also experienced the loss as well.
The De Roos lost their son, Sgt. Gabriel G. De Roo, on Aug. 20, 2006, in Mosul, Iraq, while he led a squad on patrol. He was serving his second tour of duty there with the United States Army 2/3 Infantry Company A Stryker Brigade from Fort Lewis, Wash.
"This designation originally took place June 23, 1936. While searching for the original wording of that proclamation, I came upon the proclamation of several states that have over the years, designated the last Sunday of the month as Gold Star Mother's Day. Michigan is not the first," said De Roo, vice president of the Southwest Michigan 179 Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc., and Big Dipper National Auxiliary president.
"Having our governor recognize the loss, honor, and sacrifice of the many Gold Star Mothers of this state is appropriate. I am not surprised that Gov. Granholm was willing to do so. She has supported the families of the fallen from our state for years," De Roo added.
"I do wish that this proclamation reached just a bit further than the mothers, and honored those others, as well."

The ceremony was organized by the Blue Star Mothers of America Inc., a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization of women whose children are, or have been, in the military. Under Blue Stars, women with children who have died serving in the military are distinguished as "Gold Star" mothers.

Mothers of Soldiers Attend Reception at Bush Home
The last Sunday in September is Gold Star Mother's Day, a day meant for people to honor mothers who have lost a son or daughter while serving in the United States Armed Forces.
On Saturday night, former President George W. Bush and former first lady Laura Bush hosted a reception in their Dallas home for local Gold Star Mothers and Blue Star Mothers. Blue Star Mothers are mothers that have a soldier serving their country right now.

'Parapup': New children's book brings comfort to children of deployed service members
Vertuli wrote and published the recently released "ParaPup Reports for Duty." Written in simple children's language, ParaPup, who can fly faster than a jet plane, is highly trained in snuggling. The book and a stuffed dog, ParaPup, are available for $25 from the newly-formed Blue Star Mothers organization. Hundreds of military moms from across the country are gathering in Grand Junction this week for the Blue Star Mothers of America convention.

"We are the mothers. Once you have one in there, they're all your kids. Our main message is it support these troops and veterans in any way, whether it's legislative actions or support with money," says president Wendy Hoffman.

Friday, the organization will be fundraising to build homes for wounded warriors. This is the first time in 68 years that Grand Junction has hosted the event.

HUNTLEY, Mont. - A group of mothers with children serving in the military came together today for a good cause.
The Big Sky Chapter of Blue Star Mothers of America raised money to help veterans and current service members during a golf tournament.
The Yellowstone Roadway Transportation at the Pryor Creek Golf Course.
The Big Sky Chapter of the Blue Star Mothers was founded about year ago to give mothers a chance to support veterans, their military children and each other.
"It's kind of a place for us to connect," said Kari Longshore, 2nd vice-president of the Big Sky Blue Star Mothers of America."A place to kind of cry and laugh and share, and pray for one another's kids and love one another's kids. It's really hard for the Moms when the kids first get deployed. And we also welcome military wives and kind of help them through their deployments as well."
The tournament drew 73 players and raised about five-thousand dollars.
Half the money will be used to help wounded veterans.

"This is our way of saying thank you to those men and women who have answered the call and have stepped up to the plate and who do believe in what they're doing," said Chapman.
The Blue Star Mothers are mothers who currently have or have had children honorably serving in the military. Chapman learned about the organization after her sons enlisted. She joined a chapter in Chautauqua County in March around the same time she lost her job. It was then she decided to focus her energy on starting one in the Buffalo-Niagara region.
"It's well worth it," said Chapman. "It's been a lot of work but it's been a lot of fun too along the way, and I've met some absolutely wonderful people."
Blue Star Mothers are more than a support group. They collect items for care packages and have a "Greetings from Home" campaign as well. Chapman sews pillowcases with the goal of putting one in each care package. "This helps to boost their morale to know that somebody really cares, and we're not forgotten and we're not doing this for nothing," said Chapman.
Blue Star Mothers also tend to the needs of veterans. Chapman expects to complete the Blue Star charter application Tuesday night. That's when she'll encourage others to join the group at an informational meeting at 7 p.m. at the American Legion on Amherst Street in Buffalo. The Blue Star Mother's Organization was started in 1942 in Flint, Michigan by a few mothers' who were looking for support while their sons were overseas. Central Supports Blue Star Mothers

The money raised by this year’s Cookin’ in Central was used to support several different organizations. During their annual Gold Star Mothers banquet this year, $4000 of the total funds from Cookin’ was awarded to the local chapter of Blue Star Mothers. Blue Star Mothers dates back to World War I when the families of active duty military placed the Blue Star Flag in the windows of their homes. The group waned after World War II, but became popular again after 9/11. The tradition of using the Blue Star Flag is still observed amongst the members of the organization. The group gives the mothers of active duty military a place to connect with others going through the same situations and allows them to participate in activities that benefit current and past military personnel.

“In battle, you are putting your life on the line to protect an ideal — the Constitution of the United States of America,” he said. “Talk to your children about faith and country.”

Grizz Bowl 2010: Bigger and badder than ever
Grizz Bowl 2010: Bigger and badder than ever: "The Soaring Eagle Blue Star Moms will be on hand making their second appearance at the event. The moms are scheduled to sell their delectable five fan favorites.
These sweet treats are $1 each and include Rice Krispie treats, chocolate chip cookies, frosted sugar cookies, brownies and cupcakes.
The mothers will also be tossing patriotic beach balls and miniature footballs into the crowd to keep energy levels high.
All proceeds from sweet treat sales will be put in the group’s general fund, which provides support for troops serving their county, veterans and the Susanville chapter of Blue Star Moms.
The group has grown tremendously according to chapter president Christine Boyd. The moms are currently at 68 members.
The Susanville chapter ranks at No. 5 out of the 21 chapters in California ahead of San Diego, Fresno, Yuba City and Lancaster. Nationwide the chapter is ranked 11th out of 215 for membership.
“I guess someone forgot to tell us we were a small town,” said Boyd. “The support that we have received from this community is incredible. There is so much pride and patriotism here. The Blue Star Mothers date back to 1942 and to be a part of that history means everything to me.”
Boyds son, Lane Morrow, recently returned from a tour of duty in Afghanistan and Boyd could not be happier.
Donna Spaan, another Blue Star Mother, spoke of her son Justin who is serving as a combat medic for the U.S. Army in Basra, Iraq.
“I have raised my children wanting to volunteer, to give of themselves more than they have received. I stand in awe of what my son is doing.”"

The Gerrittsen Beach Volunteer Fire Department may receive a $50,000 grant from the state assembly to help with the structural upkeep of the Blue Star Mothers Hall at 43 Seba Avenue.
As of right now the Vollies are being cautiously optimistic because they still have to fill out the appropriate paperwork, jump a hoop or two but in the end it sounds like they will get the money.
Although $50,000 sounds like a lot of money, it is specifically earmarked for the building and not for any other expense.
Don’t think that you shouldn’t give whatever you can to the Vollies because they are rolling in money cause they are not."

For Wounded Veteran, New Home a Gift of Independence
Iraq veteran and double-amputee Frank Pierson hasn’t had it easy since a projectile hit the vehicle he was driving in Baghdad, Iraq in March 2008. But he has a lot to look forward to.
Construction began in Plainfield on Friday on a new home for Pierson and his wife, Arielle, that will make it easier for Pierson to get around. Having lost both his legs, Pierson is confined to a wheelchair. The couple currently lives with Arielle’s mother in a house that makes it difficult for Frank to get from room to room.
"Being independent is a huge thing," he said in an interview for Homes for our Troops, the organization that is sponsoring the construction. "I don’t like people helping me all the time. With a new house, it would limit that."
The house is designed for Pierson and his chair. Some of its features include a waist-high stove in the kitchen, and a roll-in shower in the bathroom.

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - The sacrifice of American troops was recognized across the country Saturday. A Color Guard paid tribute to the millions of American heroes at the old Mesa County Courthouse. One veteran's effort to honor fallen soldiers is ringing out across the Grand Valley.

Funds needed to raise fallen soldier's memorial roadside signs
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - Senator Josh Penry paid tribute to a fallen Grand Junction soldier on the last day of the legislative session, and a portion of I–70 will be renamed for Cpl. Wade Oglesby who was killed by a roadside bomb in 2007.
Signage will designate the first 10 miles of I–70 on this side of the Utah border as the Wade Oglesby Citizen Hero Memorial Highway.
However, the signs will be paid for with gifts, grants and donations.

New veteran "honored" to help old veterans get once in a lifetime opportunity:
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - Tuesday morning, more than 100 local World War II veterans will take off on a whirlwind trip that will bring them face-to-face with the World War II Memorial in Washington DC. Another group of folks will be joining them to help move them from place to place -- a group who says they're honored to do that job.
Five-and-a-half months into his six month tour of Iraq, Marine Bryan Chambers' unit was hit by an IED.
"It was a pretty big IED," says Chambers. "It flipped a 14 ton vehicle, ripped a three ton engine and threw it like 40 yards."
One soldier in the vehicle with him was killed and he lost part of his leg. But the man who spent the better part of a year overcoming that kind of adversity says he was troubled to hear about an issue facing another group of veterans.
"They've never even seen their memorial," says Chambers. "Some of them just came back home and they've stayed in the Grand Junction area for their whole life since coming back from war."
Chambers first heard about Honor Flight from his sister. After he learned what it was the group did, he decided he wanted to help World War II veterans see the symbol of their country's appreciation before they're gone for good.
"They were on the beaches of Normandy -- that's on a whole different level," says Chambers. "That's just my way of thanking them for it."
Chambers says he's excited to be part of this experience. And as a new vet himself, he hopes he gets just as much out of seeing the World War II memorial as the World War II vets do.
"You see it when you're by yourself and it's just one those 'yeah, that's kind of cool things,'" says Chambers. "But when you actually see that with someone who was there I think it's that much better."

New veteran "honored" to help old veterans get once in a lifetime opportunity:
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - Tuesday morning, more than 100 local World War II veterans will take off on a whirlwind trip that will bring them face-to-face with the World War II Memorial in Washington DC. Another group of folks will be joining them to help move them from place to place -- a group who says they're honored to do that job.
Five-and-a-half months into his six month tour of Iraq, Marine Bryan Chambers' unit was hit by an IED.
"It was a pretty big IED," says Chambers. "It flipped a 14 ton vehicle, ripped a three ton engine and threw it like 40 yards."
One soldier in the vehicle with him was killed and he lost part of his leg. But the man who spent the better part of a year overcoming that kind of adversity says he was troubled to hear about an issue facing another group of veterans.
"They've never even seen their memorial," says Chambers. "Some of them just came back home and they've stayed in the Grand Junction area for their whole life since coming back from war."
Chambers first heard about Honor Flight from his sister. After he learned what it was the group did, he decided he wanted to help World War II veterans see the symbol of their country's appreciation before they're gone for good.
"They were on the beaches of Normandy -- that's on a whole different level," says Chambers. "That's just my way of thanking them for it."
Chambers says he's excited to be part of this experience. And as a new vet himself, he hopes he gets just as much out of seeing the World War II memorial as the World War II vets do.

Home to be built for injured veteran - The Denver Post
Homes for our Troops and Douglas Colony Group will spend three days building a new home for a war-injured veteran.
Douglas Colony, which specializes in roofing, metals, solar and waterproofing, is donating the building materials and labor. Aaron Lovelace of Western Classic Desing LLC is the general contractor. Work on the house is scheduled to start April 30.
The home is being built in the Wild Point Subdivision in Elizabeth for Marine Lance Cpl. Kade Hinkhouse, who served in Ramadi, Iraq. In 2005, while patrolling on a late-night mission, the vehicle Hinkhouse was riding in was hit by an explosive device. The Humvee exploded and Hinkhouse was ejected, leaving him with a skull fracture, collapsed lungs and a severe leg injury.

Military moms collecting cash for Memorial Day care packages
"Boots and bullets are always available, but the military doesn’t issue candy and chewing gum to its troops on the front lines.
The Queen City Blue Star Mothers is providing deployed American service members with the comforts of home this Memorial Day, and the fledgling group is seeking donations to help defray the cost of sending nearly two-dozen care packages.
“We can all go to the convenience store and get a Coke or a candy bar or a book or a magazine or whatever we want, but they can’t do that in Afghanistan,” said Tammie Hayes, the group’s founder. “It’s nice to send them a little piece of home.”
Organizers hope to send 20 care packages to deployed service members later this month. The gifts take three to four weeks to reach the troops and will be sent so they arrive on or before Memorial Day.
“It brightens their day to get something that has nothing to do with the war or with what’s going on,” Hayes said. “It’s just something from home.”
The packages will be stuffed with books, magazines, snacks, prepaid phone cards and small games such as dominoes. Some may also include squeeze balls for stress relief, compact discs and coffee."

Nebraska City, Neb. — When members of the 192nd Military Police Detachment, which is based in Nebraska City, are mobilized May 22, they will have many concerns on their minds — not the least of which will be the family they are leaving behind.
Putting their minds at ease is one of the most important goals of the “Yellow Ribbon” pre-mobilization event held Sunday, said 1st Lt. Joseph Sanchez, the unit’s commander.
The event, held at Northside Elementary School, provided the soldiers and their families with briefings on a variety of topics ranging from medical coverage to personal finances, child and youth services, and “emotional cycles of deployment.”
“Everyone worries about family when deployed,” said Sanchez. The briefings help “put their minds at ease knowing there are resources and support available” for their families.
“It alleviates the stress on the service member so he or she can focus on the mission and returning safely,” said Sanchez.
“We know if there’s an issue (back home), there will be help available,” said Sanchez."
A variety of organizations had informational booths available at the Yellow Ribbon event including veterans groups, the Nebraska Ministerial Association, and several Department of Defense organizations that provide services to military members and families, such as the Joint Family Support Assistance Program and the Nebraska Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve.
The Nebraska City chapter of Blue Star Mothers was also represented. PaulaWaterfield’s son has served in the military for 21 years and is currently in Iraq. Sharp’s son has served 17 years and will be stationed in Heidelberg, Germany soon.Both women said representing Blue Star Mothers is a way they can serve those who serve their country. The group also sends packages overseas to support the military.With members of the 192nd Military Police Detachment coming from a wide area, most do not have family in Nebraska City; however, the community is important to the unit’s members, Sanchez said.
Waterfield and Lucille Sharp, both of whom have sons in the military, manned the
booth to share information about the support the group offers to family
members.Anyone with a family member in the military can join the group, they
said.

Velloza's parents, Susan and Robert Velloza, were present at the donation ceremony and are Gold Star members of the Blue Star group, signifying that they lost a member of their family in the line of military duty. A fund in Velloza's name was established.

Family gives hero's welcome to Air Force daughter
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) -- A hero's welcome. That's what three soldiers got as their returned home to their families on Friday.
But for one family, the wait has been longer than most.
The Andersons, who see their daughter about once a year, welcomed her home. The visit will only last four days, but the family says they'll make every minute count.
Andrea Anderson flew home from Omaha, Nebraska. She'll be home for the weekend before heading off to Washington, D.C. to start a language class.
The 11-year Air Force Sergeant last visited her family around this time last year. Despite rarely seeing her daughter, Diana Anderson says she's very proud of Andrea's accomplishments.
