Blue Star Mothers group to form here

"ALAMOSA — As mothers, Donna Griego and Vicki Jones share the same fears and prayers for their children stationed overseas.

The mutual concerns, nightmares, and sense of pride have prompted them to start a Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. chapter in the San Luis Valley

A SLV mother who has a son or daughter who is serving, or has been honorably discharged from the Armed Forces of the United States, is welcome to attend the organizational meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, in the Adams State College Student Union.Griego was standing behind Jones, who was buying care package items for her son, Curtis, and daughter-in-law, Kimberly, 1st Lieutenants in the Army, stationed in Iraq. The two struck up a conversation and developed the idea to initiate a Blue Star Mothers chapter. Griego’s son, Tony, a Lance Corporal in the Marines, is stationed in Afghanistan. “I have spent entire days in tears,” she said. “You think you are going crazy, that there is nobody else who feels the same way.” Jones agreed, “I have had the vision of the two uniformed officers at my door. There is so much emotional turmoil as a mother of military personnel.”The two soon quickly agreed they wanted to reach out to other mothers and provide support. “It is one thing to know someone serving,” Griego said, “When it is your child, it is a different story.”In addition to providing emotional support, Griego and Jones are coordinating with the Adams State College Counseling and Career Center and the Mental Health Center to arrange counseling for members of Blue Star Mothers. Plans for the chapter include outreach to local churches and school as well as demonstrating patriotism at events. The two moms are interested in coordinating with local VFWs, American Legions, and the Veterans Center to combine resources and honor all veterans as well as those currently serving.Griego and Jones said their husbands, Joe and Art, respectively, are also adjusting to their children being overseas. All relatives and friends of service men and women are welcome to join the chapter, as non-voting members.Griego appreciates President David Svaldi and Adams State for their assistance in launching the SLV Blue Star Mothers."
