Most of the servicemen and women showed the archetypical military stoicism gazing past the camera.
But in the hands of their mothers and fathers Tuesday night, the framed pictures of their sons and daughters gave a feeling of warmth. More than 40 parents gathered Tuesday night with photos of their relatives in the military for a group photograph to show their unity and mark today's fifth anniversary since the start of the Iraq war.
The event was organized by the Texas Coastal Bend Chapter of Blue Star Mothers of America. The group invited family to show up with an 8-by-10-inch framed photo of their military relative.
"We're here to put a face to what we are doing so people can see we do have sons and daughters," said Marsha Jones, president of the local chapter whose daughter, Sarah Haller, and son-in-law, Josh Haller, are in the Army and have served in Iraq for more than eight months.
