Officers salute Navy medic killed in Afghanistan

"Police, firefighters and the public paid tribute today to a Riverbank Navy corpsman killed in Afghanistan.
The body of James Layton received a police escort from Modesto Airport to a funeral home in Escalon. Layton, 22, who was killed Sept. 8 as he tended to a wounded Marine during a firefight.
Law enforcement officers and firefighters escorted Layton's body to Deegan Funeral Chapel in Escalon. The Blue Star Mothers and the Patriot Guard Riders, a motorcycle group, rode in the procession."

Debbie Katsounakis, Blue Star's Central Valley Chapter president, said Layton was a hero. "He died protecting us. And he didn't die in vain."
